Fall Steelhead Fishing

October and November are the perfect months to chase after fall steelhead in Northern Michigan. The leaves are changing, the weather is typically pleasant and the salmon are spawning. These migratory fish head up rivers such as the Platte, Betsie, Pere Marquette, Bear Creek and the Manistee River below Tippy Dam in search of salmon eggs, flesh, sucker fry that are leaving the rivers and anything else they can forage. The beauty of a fall steelhead is they are in the river for one reason, and that is to consume food. Following the scent of the King salmon heading up the river to spawn, these migratory rainbows enter the river and hold in soft pools, sand runs and even right up behind the spawning salmon to pilfer what flows down.
